Welcome to Anaconda, Montana!
Anaconda, Montana is located in the heart of
southwestern Montana between two of the
countries most cherished national parks,
Yellowstone and Glacier. WV Marcus Daly, one
of the Copper Kings, founded Anaconda in 1883.
The Anaconda and Butte areas, with the early
mining and smelting of copper and other metals,
were vital to the early industrialization of the country.
Today Anaconda is becoming widely recognized as
a great outdoor recreational area. Anaconda is the
Gateway to the Pintler Primitive area, Deer Lodge
National Forest, Lost Creek State Park, Discovery
Basin Ski Area, the Big Hole Battelfield,
Georgetown Lake and other lakes and ghost towns
west of Anaconda. Within a short drive the area
offers some of the best hunting and fishing in the
entire country. The nearby mountains are a rock-
hunter's paradise, and feature sapphires, garnets,
fossils and gold.
The Anaconda Visitor Center Complex is in the
middle of town. The complex is a replica of the
old train station which captures memorabilia of
railroad and smelter history. Close by is the
century-old City Hall, which now houses an art
gallery, historical museum and archives, studios
and shops. The well preserved Washoe Theater,
listed in the National Register of Historical
Places, is one of the five most beautiful theaters
in the U.S.
Anaconda offers a wide variety of activities from
a guided tour of Historic Anaconda on a vintage
Glacier Park 1937 White Tour Bus to a Walking
Tour of historic homes and sites of Anaconda.
There 's also nearby Washoe Park, with its
playground, tennis courts, picnic areas, outdoor
swimming pool and the Montana State
Fish Hatchery.
