Anaconda, Montana is located in the heart of southwestern Montana between two of the countries most cherished national parks, Yellowstone and Glacier. WV Marcus Daly, one of the Copper Kings, founded Anaconda in 1883. The Anaconda and Butte areas, with the early mining and smelting of copper and other metals, were vital to the early industrialization of the country. Today Anaconda is becoming widely recognized as a great outdoor recreational area. Anaconda is the Gateway to the Pintler Primitive area, Deer Lodge National Forest, Lost Creek State Park, Discovery Basin Ski Area, the Big Hole Battelfield, Georgetown Lake and other lakes and ghost towns west of Anaconda. Within a short drive the area offers some of the best hunting and fishing in the entire country. The nearby mountains are a rock- hunter's paradise, and feature sapphires, garnets, fossils and gold.
The Anaconda Visitor Center Complex is in the middle of town. The complex is a replica of the old train station which captures memorabilia of railroad and smelter history. Close by is the century-old City Hall, which now houses an art gallery, historical museum and archives, studios and shops. The well preserved Washoe Theater, listed in the National Register of Historical Places, is one of the five most beautiful theaters in the U.S. Take in more of the beautiful sceanry by a riding on the Copper King Express Excursion Train, which runs from Anaconda to Butte. Anaconda offers a wide variety of activities from a guided tour of Historic Anaconda on a vintage Glacier Park 1937 White Tour Bus to a Walking Tour of historic homes and sites of Anaconda. There 's also nearby Washoe Park, with its playground, tennis courts, picnic areas, outdoor swimming pool and the Montana State Fish Hatchery.
